⛏🧱We are back from a much-needed rest and are ready to collect more materials so we can continue crafting our way towards a college education! We've returned with some updates on what the students have been doing with their time at Salem University. 🧱⛏

Day One: It would be time to hit the books once again, as the students returned to their classes for the week. In the evening, everybody got to attend an intriguing, informative presentation by The Newbees, a beekeeping business local to WV, about bees, how honey is made, what goes into removing a beehive from a home, and more! Make sure to check them out! Social: @newbeeswv

Day Two: Students saved up their energy and talents for the evening activity after classes on Tuesday. It was UB Olympics Tryout Day! Students honed their skills in various sport-related activities, put their artistic skills to the test, and gave it their all. At the end, there was a friendly competition between rising senior, Braydon Ash, and rising junior, Melanie Bryant. Both put on terrific performances that deserved and earned much applause. In the end, it was Braydon Ash who was selected to move on to perform in UB Idol at Marshall University for the UB Olympics in a couple of days.

Day Three: Day Three would start a little differently for seniors. After being provided a wonderful breakfast by the cooks, they would hop on a bus to visit the Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center and the Aurora Flight Sciences WV at the North Central West Virginia Airport. They got to take a look at what goes into making an aircraft and how the evolution of technology has allowed aircraft manufacturers to produce different types of aircraft at a faster rate than what they could in the past. Unfortunately, students could not bring their phones into the buildings, but thankfully some photography was allowed in designated areas so we will have something to show for the trip. They were introduced to what some of the students do at Pierpont Community & Technical College's aviation maintenance program. However, Wednesday's evening event had to be changed due to weather-related circumstances. Instead of going to Splash Zone, they went to the movies. Students were able to choose between Inside Out 2, Garfield, The Watchers, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and if time was permitted they could shop around the mall for a little while.

Day Four: Thursday was the Upward Bound Olympics, hosted at Marshall University. Their hospitality was great and the students were friendly. The students had a wonderful time during the competition and did a phenomenal job. Even the students who didn't sign up for an activity did so well cheering on those who did! From fashion shows and sidewalk chalk to vicious volleyball and track events, there was a competition for everyone to enjoy! At the end of it all, Salem UB scored 2nd place for the 2nd time in a row and was rewarded for their sportsmanship with a trophy. After the Olympics, the students were extremely exhausted, so they returned to Salem on a comfortable air-conditioned charter bus and prepared for the final day of week two.

Day Five: Friday was a short day, but it was an exciting one. After morning and afternoon classes, the students would pack up and leave for the weekend. Afterwards, parents showed up to collect their loved ones headed home for the weekend; and prepared for the shorter week ahead of them. The adventure will continue next week, but for now we will be venturing into the depths of the caves to gather some diamonds so we can be better equipped for next week's journey!
